Glaucoma is a chronic problem that has treatment but no cure; therefore, ophthalmologist Teresa Gomes reminds us that regular appointments are very important, even after the operation.
It is up to the ophthalmologist, essentially the one dedicated to glaucoma treatment, namely surgical treatment, to manage patient expectations. The patient should see glaucoma and its treatment at the present time as a pathology that has a wide range of surgical techniques, which are increasingly more successful, less evasive and with less risk, and therefore should be pleased with this fact; but, in order to avoid frustration of results after the surgeries, it is important to be aware that glaucoma has no cure. There is medical, laser and surgical treatment for glaucoma, but there is no cure.
There is a great chance of choice at the moment, with very good results. Normally, the overwhelming majority of glaucoma patients maintain an optimal quality of life while living, but it is a chronic disease that has no cure.
The importance of frequent appointments with the doctor, even after glaucoma surgery has been completed must be present - the patient cannot abandon the follow up, the regular appointments with their ophthalmologist, even if they have had glaucoma surgery.
Tomorrow we will talk about the importance of drops to control glaucoma.
