The training of an ophthalmologist in Portugal begins with medical school and ophthalmologist Ana Miranda explains the steps of this academic pathway:
The course lasts 6 years, during which the medical student will come into contact with various specialities, including ophthalmology - although it is a very short contact, learning only the theoretical and clinical bases of the speciality.
Then, at the end of the medical course, the young doctor will take a test, which is the National Examination of Seriation, which allows access in an ordered manner to the specialty. After finishing the course, the doctor then begins his internship. He or she will complete a year of general training, which is called the common year, and then follows four years of specific training in Ophthalmology, which must be carried out in a service certified by the Order of Physicians.
During these four years of training, the doctor must acquire all the theoretical and technical knowledge of a speciality that is in constant technological advance, fulfilling a programme, which is a training programme in Ophthalmology.
And, at the end of the specialty, the Ophthalmology resident must take a final exam where his curriculum and knowledge are evaluated. When approved, is finally considered a specialist in Ophthalmology.
Not all services in Portugal are qualified to train ophthalmologists. Only those whose capacities are recognised by the College of Ophthalmology of the Portuguese Ordem dos Médicos. To maintain the quality and safety of patients, the Ordem dos Médicos is very strict in this certification of services.
Tomorrow we talk about the judicious choices in vision health.
With the support of the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology.
