OftalmoGPS returns with a new episode entirely dedicated to the ocular surface, reinforcing the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology’s (SPO) commitment to continuing education and its connection to leading international scientific networks. In this episode, titled “Ocular Surface 360° – from the microbiome to challenging surgical rehabilitations,” the host is Dr. Miguel Neves, coordinator of the SPO’s Portuguese Cornea and External Ocular Surface Group, who leads an in-depth and practical discussion on some of the most current topics in this field.

Throughout the episode, two main themes are explored: on the one hand, the role of the ocular surface microbiome—the “right bacteria” that can decisively alter our understanding of infections, inflammation, and the stability of the tear film; on the other, the challenges of surgical rehabilitation in severe ocular surface diseases, including complex grafts, staged surgeries, and long, demanding rehabilitation processes. The discussion is enriched by the experience of two guests from EuCornea, who offer a European and up-to-date perspective on research and clinical practice in this field.

This content is part of the SPO’s strategy to bring its members closer to international scientific societies and to promote evidence-based ophthalmology that is grounded in the realities of daily clinical practice. The episode offers not only a theoretical and scientific framework but also practical examples and real-life cases, allowing ophthalmologists to reflect on how they can integrate this new knowledge into their own practice.
